Evaluation of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Programs during Florida Huricane Season 2004

The central question will be the investigation of the role of individuals in community-based training programs regarding three phenomena: the transmission of risk information to the community, specifically hurricane preparedness information; second, the effect on behavior related to Hurricane Warning and Evacuation; and third, actual response behavior.

Radiological Health and Medical Plan

The Center for Hazards Research and Policy Development at the University of Louisville has been assigned to develop a Radiological Health and Medical Plan for the Division of Environmental and Emergency Management (DEEM), funded by the Lexington Fayette Urban County Government (LFUCG) as part of the Metropolitan Medical Response System (MMRS).

DIVISION OF WATER COMMUNITY OUTREACH

DOWCO is a tutorial, web-based outreach and training program intended to increase state agency and local government understanding of the function and usability of data produced by Map Modernization efforts (including Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps (DFIRMs) and the administration of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

DIVISION OF WATER FLOOD MAP MODERNIZATION PRoJECT

The program aims to modernize current county maps within the Commonwealth of Kentucky to identify streams within the National Flood Insurance Program; to supply the state with a full set of flood maps, to identify large streams in the state that have not been studied for flood threats; to create data that would aid state agencies in setting priority areas for future studies that would best meet the needs for residents.

Disaster Resistant University

The DRU is a planning initiative where universities develop a hazard mitigation plan like cities, counties and states with a mission to promote campus disaster planning, mitigation, response and recovery.

Man-Portable Interoperable Tactical Operations Center

The goal of the Man-Portable Tactical Operations Center is to design, test, deploy and evaluate a suite of man-portable interoperable voice, data, radio, and video technologies and deliver a strategic plan on how to integrate these resources into the Commonwealth of Kentucky�s Homeland Security and Emergency Operations concepts of operation. The Center for Hazards Research and Policy Development is contributing to the evaluation of the program.

Emergency Communications with Your Local Government and Community

The purpose of this research initiative is to provide increased utilization of emergency communication in preparation for and response to crisis events, whether technologically-induced or the result of natural disasters. Recent events such as the World Trade Center attack, the anthrax scare, Ohio River flooding, and the Northeast power outage clearly demonstrate the need for improved systems of communicating emergency information to the public.
